Almost 1 month into the school year already! Here is what my 7th and 8th grade students were up to this week! 7th Grade finished up their Typography Self-Portraits (seen below, click to enlarge) using an analogous color scheme for the foreground, and the opposite analogous scheme for the background, which included lyrics of their choice. This is a project I do every year with 7th graders, and I love the result time and time again.
Up next - HOMECOMING WEEK!

One of my favorite projects to complete with 7th graders is pictured below! This project is a practice of learning facial proportions, a review of warm/cool colors, and a chance to incorporate music lyrics into an artwork. I always love the results!
Click on the images to enlarge. These lovely portraits were completed by my amazing 7th grade class. They learned the proportion of the face, and drew out a self-portrait with pencil. Once they were satisfied with it, they chose a song, looked up the lyrics, and wrote them out in the background of the image. If the art was to their liking, it was then finalized with black sharpie. The last step was to paint the entire picture using watercolor. The trick was that the foreground and background had some restrictions. One area had to be warm colors (red, orange and yellow) and the other section cool colors (blue, purple, and green). Splitting the foreground and background creates a high level of contrast, and a vibrant result. I cannot wait to display these! 8th graders are starting to work on a self-portrait project. The first step was to enlarge their image (a photo taken in class), and later to finalize it with sharpie. There will be many more steps to this process. Check back for updates! Both the 7th and 8th grade classes just completed their first week in the art room. The first project for them was the Sharpie Hand Design. This project was a chance for me to assess their skill level, and get an idea of the overall capability of the entire class. The results turned out well! Also this week, they started sketchbooks, and created portfolios (over-sized folded poster board pockets) to keep future work in through out the Trimester. I look forward to the upcoming art projects! Keep checking back for student written blogs... coming soon :) Today was the first day for 7th and 8th graders in the Art room. They started their first project - Sharpie Hand Designs. This project is a chance for me to see their skill level, and for them to learn my style of teaching, and how the class operates. Reminder to students - DUE on Friday: 30 minutes in your sketchbook, completed portfolio (poster board folded in half), photo release/signature page, and of course your first project! |
