High school students all started out the semester with a little review in Color Theory. Intro to Art students (freshmen) created Color Theory Cubes by mixing their own hues - tertiary colors, tints and tones! Completed projects can be viewed below and are currently on display in the front entrance of the high school. Click on the images below to enlarge. Visual Arts students (more advanced) are working on 12-section Color Theory Mandalas. These mandalas were designed by the students, replicated using carbon paper, and all hues were mixed by hand. The images below are works in progress. Click to enlarge the images below of completed projects.

at the elementary during the polar vortex string of snow days! We've been busy in the art room over the first few weeks of school, so I thought I'd give an update of what we've been up to. This semester, I have 4 classes at the high school building: Art 8, Art 6 and two sections of Intro to Art (freshmen). All students started the year by creating a digital portfolio, sketchbook, and "gem" to add to a bulletin board. Next, all classes reviewed Color Theory basics, and the Elements of Art to use in future projects. To use the color theory skills we reviewed, all classes completed a Teacher Collaborative Painting. I was inspired by the AMAZING art teacher extraordinaire, Cassie Stephens for this idea. The example here was done for an elementary school in general. I thought it would be fun to create one of these for the staff in the 6th-12th grade building. Students were broken up into small groups, staff members were chosen, and they started working away! I LOVED this project and it was a great way to start off the year. Students were required to list the staff member's name, as well as what subject they teach or their job at our school. After the black letters were painted, color was added to fill all of the spaces. After color was added the final step was to embellish with designs/illustrations. The tricky part was the colors chosen had to be one of the color schemes we reviewed - complementary, analogous, monochromatic, etc. After all small details were complete, white highlight was the final step to make the letters stand out. The highlight of the whole project was having each group deliver their finished product to the staff member, and hearing about the reactions. I'm happy to have hopefully made someone's day, and have a lesson about creating something for someone else. Art 8 Students with their final projects! Art 6 Groups Click on the images below to see enlarge the photos of the process of creating these masterpieces! After delivering the paintings today, all classes focused on individual work. Art 8To see more on this project (and final results) CLICK HERE. Intro to ArtMy 9th grade students are creating a 1-Point Perspective Collage. This project is a great overall review of the Elements and Principles of Art using a variety of media in the process. After the collage portion is complete, students will add the perspective portion on top of the magazine to give the illusion of depth. Finished examples can be seen below. Check out more completed Intro to Art projects HERE. Art 6Last, but not least, my Art 6 students are covering the elements of art in detail for the first time. I chose this Mixed Media project as an overview of all the elements: line, color, shape/form, space, value and texture. Final results of this Art 6 Mixed Media project can be found HERE.
Art 7 - Students created School Spirit posters in small groups to show their knowledge of the Elements of Art. Drawing/Painting - Students finished their Geometric Silhouettes, and started on the #mymessymandala project. The first layers of students' mandala were started this past week. Click to enlarge. Art 8 - Students completed their Camouflage Paintings inspired by Guido Daniele. Up next, they are working on projects based on the Principles of Art. Intro. to Art - Students finished up their Mixed Media Self-Portraits, and watched The Good Dinosaur in preparation for Homecoming week hallway designs. Collaborative Cubes ProjectALL classes also created a cube to contribute to the collaborative cube project inspired by ThankYouX. Read more about that on the separate post HERE.
