We've been busy in the art room over the first few weeks of school, so I thought I'd give an update of what we've been up to. This semester, I have 4 classes at the high school building: Art 8, Art 6 and two sections of Intro to Art (freshmen). All students started the year by creating a digital portfolio, sketchbook, and "gem" to add to a bulletin board. Next, all classes reviewed Color Theory basics, and the Elements of Art to use in future projects. To use the color theory skills we reviewed, all classes completed a Teacher Collaborative Painting. I was inspired by the AMAZING art teacher extraordinaire, Cassie Stephens for this idea. The example here was done for an elementary school in general. I thought it would be fun to create one of these for the staff in the 6th-12th grade building. Students were broken up into small groups, staff members were chosen, and they started working away! I LOVED this project and it was a great way to start off the year. Students were required to list the staff member's name, as well as what subject they teach or their job at our school. After the black letters were painted, color was added to fill all of the spaces. After color was added the final step was to embellish with designs/illustrations. The tricky part was the colors chosen had to be one of the color schemes we reviewed - complementary, analogous, monochromatic, etc. After all small details were complete, white highlight was the final step to make the letters stand out. The highlight of the whole project was having each group deliver their finished product to the staff member, and hearing about the reactions. I'm happy to have hopefully made someone's day, and have a lesson about creating something for someone else. Art 8 Students with their final projects! Art 6 Groups Click on the images below to see enlarge the photos of the process of creating these masterpieces! After delivering the paintings today, all classes focused on individual work. This project is a great overall review of the Elements and Principles of Art using a variety of media in the process. After the collage portion is complete, students will add the perspective portion on top of the magazine to give the illusion of depth. Finished examples can be seen below. Check out more completed Intro to Art projects HERE. Art 6Last, but not least, my Art 6 students are covering the elements of art in detail for the first time. I chose this Mixed Media project as an overview of all the elements: line, color, shape/form, space, value and texture. Final results of this Art 6 Mixed Media project can be found HERE.

Week 2 flew by! Our new semester schedule featuring a 6 hour day makes it seem like each day moves very quickly. I was nervous about 60 minute classes (compared to having 70+ minute classes for the last 5 years), but now I love them! I find my classes to use their time well, and I like the fast-paced environment. It's been a busy week, but I am happy with how everything has been going. Here is a little summary of what we've been up to! All of my classes 7th-12th grade are creating digital portfolios this year using Google Slides. Examples of their title pages can be seen below. Each time a student finishes a project, they will be posting a photo of it to their portfolio, and writing a corresponding artist statement. Art 7 is finishing up School Spirit Posters in small groups. Their designs must show all 6 Elements of Art in the final product. Most groups will finish on Monday, and we will have a group critique to follow. You can see progress on their work by clicking on the images below. Art 8 is finishing up Camouflage Paintings in small groups showing all the Elements of Art, as well as 2 Principles of Art (Emphasis and Pattern). This project was inspired by Guido Daniele, an artist famous for hand painting. The challenge was to incorporate 2 hidden hands in their final piece. Two groups have finished, and their images are pictured below (click to enlarge). My Drawing/Painting class is finishing up one of my favorite projects - Geometric Silhouettes. After reviewing color theory, they jumped right in to this project and blew me away. Some students finished on Friday, but most will finish Monday or Tuesday of this week. I cannot wait to post the results! Last, but not least, my Intro to Art class is working on Mixed Media Self-Portraits. this project combines portrait drawing, magazine collage as a color theory review, and a little free choice typography addition. More pictures to come soon! This week also included the start of Homecoming preparation. Class meetings were held on Friday to vote for Homecoming court and to sign up for Powder Puff Games Sign-ups are posted in the cafeteria! Homecoming week will start on Monday, October 2nd, with the game the following Friday (6th) and the dance on Saturday (7th). The Powder Puff Football game will take place on Friday afternoon for the girls. The NHS-sponsored Powder Puff Volleyball game will take on Wednesday afternoon for the boys. There will also be a Lightning Basketball Challenge in between the Powder Puff Volleyball games. A National Honor Society update can be found HERE. Thanks for viewing my website! Please check back for more updates soon!
The first week of school flew by! We have been busy in the JH and HS art classes getting oriented with the art room, reviewing material, and diving into the first project. Over the first week all classes completed the following tasks: *Reviewed the specific classroom syllabus and rules/expectations *Completed a classroom tour *Created a student portfolios to hold artwork *Reviewed concepts from previous years using dry erase boards (color theory, elements of art, etc) *Created their first mini-project: The Name Design (see below) Last but not least, the final project was to create individual digital portfolios for each student. In order to do this, students used Google Slides as the format. Each time a student finishes a project, they will complete a rubric (see below), and the project will be added to the Google Slide presentation that will hold photos of all of their completed projects. In addition to the projects, students will write a corresponding Artist Statement (see below) to go along with the photo. You can see the portfolios of students (in progress) by clicking on the link for a particular class below. This year, my whiteboard is filled out daily with our agenda and Learning Targets for the day in the form of "I Can" statements. These learning targets are a way for me to describe what I'd like the students to accomplish that particular day (or for a certain project) in correspondence with the state standards. The agenda and learning targets pictured here are for Week 2 of the school year (Tuesday). Up next for the 7th -12th Art: *Art 7 - Elements of Art Review/School Spirit Posters *Drawing/Painting - Geometric Silhouettes *Art 8 - Camouflage Paintings (inspired by Guido Daniele) *Intro. to Art - Mixed Media Self-Portraits |
